Institutional Demand Drives Jio IPO Momentum
Jio Platforms' Rs 30,213-crore initial public offering (IPO) drew strong investor demand on the second day of bidding, with total subscriptions reaching 5.25 times the shares on offer by 5:21 pm on Thursday, October 22. Institutional investors led the rush, while retail participation and high-net-worth investor demand also increased sharply.
The offering had attracted subscriptions of 3.04 times on its opening day, October 21. The latest figures mark a significant jump in investor interest as the public issue approaches its final day on Friday, October 23.
The strong response has put the spotlight on Jio Platforms, the digital services arm of Reliance Industries, as investors assess its market prospects and potential listing performance.
QIBs Lead as Investor Demand Broadens
Qualified institutional buyers (QIBs) remained the strongest contributors to the IPO's subscription figures. Their reserved portion was subscribed 12.41 times on Day 2, up from 9.04 times on the first day.
Non-institutional investors (NIIs), including high-net-worth individuals, also increased their participation. Their category recorded subscriptions of 5.54 times, compared with 1.61 times on Wednesday.
Demand was strong across both NII segments. Applications in the category for investments of up to Rs 10 lakh were subscribed 4.17 times, while applications exceeding Rs 10 lakh reached 6.23 times.
Retail investors also moved decisively into the offering. Their reserved portion rose from 0.73 times on Day 1 to 1.53 times on Day 2, indicating that individual investor demand had moved beyond the shares allocated to the category.
The employee portion received subscriptions of 2.03 times, while the shareholder category reached 3.86 times.
The figures point to broad participation across investor groups, although institutional demand remains the main driver of the overall subscription level.
Grey Market Premium Points to Potential 22% Gain
Jio Platforms shares were commanding a grey market premium (GMP) of around Rs 247 on Thursday, according to the figures provided.
At the upper end of the IPO price band of Rs 1,119 per share, this premium implies an indicative listing price of Rs 1,366. That would represent a potential gain of approximately 22.1% over the issue price.
The premium has added to market interest ahead of the stock's expected debut. However, investors should treat the estimate with caution.
Grey market trading takes place outside the formal stock exchange system. Its premium is an unofficial measure of market sentiment, not a confirmed forecast of the listing price. Actual performance will depend on investor demand, prevailing market conditions and trading activity when the shares begin trading.
A high GMP can indicate optimism, but it does not guarantee listing gains. The premium can also change before the issue closes.
IPO Price Band, Minimum Investment and Use of Proceeds
The public issue carries a price band of Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119 per share and comprises 27 crore fresh equity shares.
Investors must bid for a minimum of 12 shares. At the upper price band, the minimum application amount is Rs 13,428.
The subscription window closes on Friday, October 23, leaving investors one final day to submit applications.
Jio Platforms plans to use a substantial portion of the proceeds to repay borrowings at its subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm. The remaining funds are earmarked for general corporate purposes.
The proposed use of funds places debt repayment among the key financial considerations for investors evaluating the offering.
Final Day of Bidding Will Test Investor Appetite
Jio Platforms' IPO has gained momentum across institutional, non-institutional and retail categories, with overall subscriptions rising to 5.25 times by the end of Day 2.
The 12.41-times institutional subscription and the indicative 22.1% listing gain suggested by the grey market premium have strengthened attention around the offering.
Yet the final assessment will depend on more than subscription figures or unofficial market signals. Investors will need to consider the company's financial position, business outlook and the risks associated with market volatility.
With bidding scheduled to close on October 23, the final day's demand will provide a clearer picture of investor appetite before the listing. The grey market premium offers a snapshot of current sentiment, not a promise of returns.
