Jio Platforms IPO Sets a Global Participation Record
Jio Platforms’ ₹30,213-crore initial public offering (IPO) has attracted bids worth more than ₹7 lakh crore, drawing over 1.38 crore applications and setting a global record for investor participation in a public offering. The issue closed on Friday with an overall subscription of 22.2 times, highlighting strong demand across investor categories.
Investors bid for 655.68 crore shares against 27 crore fresh shares offered by the company. The response places the telecom and digital-services business among the most closely watched public market listings and marks a major event for India's IPO market.
Institutional Investors Drive Subscription
Qualified institutional buyers (QIBs) led the demand, subscribing to their allotted portion 70.55 times. They submitted bids for 345.76 crore shares, reflecting strong institutional interest in the offering.
The public portion received bids for 438.26 crore shares against 19.75 crore shares available, representing a subscription rate of 22.19 times. Demand also extended to other investor groups, although subscription levels varied considerably.
The non-institutional investor category was subscribed 14 times, while retail investors subscribed 2.72 times their allotted portion. Employees subscribed 2.93 times, and eligible shareholders subscribed 7.6 times.
The anchor investor book also attracted substantial interest. Bids exceeded ₹2.5 lakh crore against an allocation of approximately ₹8,110 crore, translating into demand of more than 30 times the available allocation. Jio Platforms had allotted shares to 212 anchor investors before the public issue opened.
The subscription figures accelerated during the final phase of bidding. At the end of the second day on Thursday, the IPO had been subscribed 5.57 times. QIB demand stood at 13.29 times, non-institutional investors at 5.97 times and retail investors at 1.54 times. The final figures showed a sharp increase in demand as the issue approached its closing deadline.
India's Largest-Ever IPO
With an issue size of ₹30,213 crore, Jio Platforms has set a new benchmark for India's primary market. The offering consists entirely of 27 crore fresh shares, with no offer for sale by existing shareholders.
At the upper end of its price band of ₹1,119 per share, the IPO values Jio Platforms at approximately ₹10.3 lakh crore, equivalent to around $108.3 billion. This makes it the most valuable company to go public in India by IPO valuation, according to the figures provided for the offering.
The scale of the issue gives investors an opportunity to participate in a business that has become a major force in India's telecommunications and digital-services sectors. However, the subscription figures measure demand for shares during the offering and do not, by themselves, establish how the stock will perform after listing.
Reliance Group Returns to the IPO Market
Jio Platforms operates as the telecommunications and digital-services arm of Reliance Industries. The business serves more than 500 million mobile users, giving it a substantial presence in India's communications market.
The IPO also marks the Reliance group’s first public offering in nearly two decades. Its size and investor response make the listing a significant development for the group and India's capital markets.
The company intends to use up to ₹27,500 crore from the proceeds to repay or prepay borrowings of its wholly owned subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm. The remaining funds will go towards general corporate purposes.
Debt repayment is a major stated objective of the fundraising. The allocation could help reduce the subsidiary's borrowing burden, although the financial impact will depend on the amount of debt repaid and the company's broader funding requirements.

What Investors Should Watch Next
Jio Platforms shares are scheduled to list on October 28. Investors will be watching the listing price, early trading volumes and market demand to assess how the company is valued once its shares begin trading publicly.
The record subscription signals strong interest in the offering, particularly among institutional investors. Yet heavy demand does not guarantee listing gains or protect investors from market volatility. The stock's performance will also depend on broader market conditions, business growth, profitability and investor expectations.
The IPO's record participation establishes a major milestone for India's public markets. The next test will come when trading begins and market prices reveal how investors value Jio Platforms beyond the subscription stage.
Conclusion: A Landmark IPO Faces Its Market Test
Jio Platforms has attracted more than ₹7 lakh crore in bids and over 1.38 crore applications, setting a new global benchmark for investor participation in a public offering. Its ₹30,213-crore IPO is also India's largest-ever, supported by strong institutional demand.
The October 28 listing will provide the first direct market assessment of that enthusiasm. The record subscription makes the IPO notable, but the company's post-listing performance will ultimately determine whether investor expectations are justified.
