Jio's 500 Million Customer Milestone Draws Praise
Jio Platforms is preparing to enter India's stock market with an initial public offering that could raise approximately ₹30,213 crore, as investor interest builds around the telecom and digital services giant. Ahead of the October 21 opening, veteran investor Manish Chokhani has praised the company's growth, highlighting its achievement of serving more than 500 million customers and reaching a reported valuation exceeding $100 billion.
Chokhani, director of Enam Holdings, credited Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani and Jio Platforms for building a business of such scale in India's price-sensitive and highly competitive market. In a post on X, he highlighted the company's journey from zero customers to a base of more than 500 million, expressing hope that India would produce many more companies capable of competing at a global scale.
His remarks come as market participants prepare for one of the country's most closely watched public offerings. The proposed listing will give investors an opportunity to buy shares in a business that has become a major force in India's telecommunications and digital services sectors.
India's Largest IPO Could Reshape the Market
Jio Platforms has set a price band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per equity share for its IPO. At the upper end of the range, the fresh issue is expected to raise approximately ₹30,213 crore, potentially making it India's largest initial public offering.
The offering is scheduled to open on Wednesday, October 21, and close on Friday, October 23, 2026. Anchor investor bidding is scheduled for October 19, ahead of the public subscription period.
The issue consists entirely of a fresh issuance of up to 27 crore equity shares, with no offer-for-sale component. Existing shareholders will not sell their holdings through the offering, according to the supplied issue details.
The distinction matters. A fresh issue involves the company issuing new shares to raise capital, rather than existing investors selling their shares to public-market buyers. The funds raised through the offering will therefore go to the company, subject to the terms and stated purposes of the issue.
At the proposed valuation, investor attention will extend beyond Jio's customer base to its ability to sustain growth, generate profits and compete in a market where telecom operators face significant investment requirements.
Global and Domestic Investors Watch the Offering
Reports suggest that Jio Platforms has attracted commitments of nearly ₹2.5 lakh crore from prospective investors ahead of the IPO. That figure points to substantial interest, although commitments and expressions of interest should not be treated as final subscription figures or confirmed share allocations.
Potential participants in the anchor book reportedly include international asset managers Allianz and BlackRock, along with sovereign wealth funds and other major institutional investors.
Among the other institutions reported to be interested are the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation, Fidelity, Norway's Government Pension Fund Global, New World Fund Inc. and Smallcap World Fund Inc.
Domestic institutions, including the Life Insurance Corporation of India, SBI Mutual Fund, ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund, HDFC Mutual Fund and Kotak Mahindra Mutual Fund, have also been named among prospective investors in media reports.
The final anchor allocations and subscription data will provide a clearer picture of demand. Until those figures are confirmed, the reported commitments offer an indication of interest rather than proof of completed investment.
Uday Kotak Highlights the Significance of the Listing
Kotak Mahindra Bank founder Uday Kotak has also drawn attention to the proposed listing. He said a separate market valuation for Jio Platforms could strengthen the Reliance Industries group's position in India's equity markets.
Kotak described the offering as a historic event for the group, noting that it would be its largest IPO in nearly two decades. He also highlighted the proposed issue size, which would surpass the ₹27,870 crore raised by Hyundai Motor India in 2024.
A separate listing could help investors assess Jio Platforms on its own financial performance, growth prospects and business strategy, rather than evaluating its digital and telecom operations solely through Reliance Industries.
For the wider market, the IPO could also test institutional appetite for a large Indian technology and telecommunications business at a valuation above $100 billion.
IPO Details Investors Need to Know
The price band stands at ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share, with a minimum bid lot of 12 shares. Investors must place subsequent bids in multiples of 12 shares.
Eligible employees participating through the employee reservation portion will receive a discount of ₹54 per equity share, according to the supplied details. Each share has a face value of ₹10.
The issue's size, reported institutional interest and Jio's customer reach make it a major event for India's primary market. However, the scale of the business alone does not determine whether the shares will offer attractive returns. Investors will need to assess the company's financial disclosures, valuation, risks and long-term earnings potential.
A Landmark Listing With High Expectations
Jio Platforms enters its IPO with a customer base exceeding 500 million, a reported valuation above $100 billion and strong reported interest from institutional investors. Chokhani's praise reflects the scale of the company's expansion under Mukesh Ambani's leadership.
The next test will be in the market. Final subscription figures, the company's financial performance and investor assessments of its valuation will help determine whether Jio's public debut lives up to the expectations surrounding India's largest proposed IPO.
