Jio Plans a Major Technology Push
Jio Platforms wants to move beyond affordable mobile data and expand access to artificial intelligence, cloud computing and space-based connectivity over the next decade. Akash Ambani, Managing Director of Jio Platforms, outlined the company's ambitions on Wednesday, October 28, as the business marked its stock market debut.
The listing marks a new phase for the telecom and digital services company, which says it has spent its first decade bringing hundreds of millions of Indians into the digital economy. Its next goal is to make advanced technologies accessible to a wider population while expanding its presence in India and international markets.
"In our first ten years, we democratised data, bringing hundreds of millions into digital life," Ambani said. He added that Jio wants to make technologies that can transform Indian lives, including AI, cloud services, connected devices and connectivity from space, more widely available.
The announcement places technology access at the centre of Jio's long-term plans. It also raises questions about how the company will turn its ambitions into affordable services for consumers and businesses.
From Affordable Data to Advanced Digital Services
Ambani described Jio's first decade as a period of building digital access at scale. He recalled joining the company when it had no customers or revenue, but a team determined to provide affordable, world-class technology to Indians.
He highlighted the milestone of reaching 100 million subscribers in February 2017. Today, according to his speech, Jio's homegrown platforms serve more than 540 million customers.
Ambani used the story of a young girl named Anjali in Kerala to illustrate the impact of connectivity. She once had to walk two kilometres uphill to access mobile data on her mother's phone and download school lessons. With Jio connectivity, that daily journey ended, allowing her to study from home.
The example reflected the company's stated goal of measuring its success through the opportunities technology creates. Ambani said Jio's next phase would focus on connecting computing, intelligence and digital services so that people across India's regions and languages can participate in the digital economy.
Artificial intelligence and cloud computing could extend the company's services beyond traditional telecommunications. Connected devices and space-based connectivity could also expand how people and businesses access digital networks, although the speech did not provide detailed timelines, investment figures or specific product launches for these areas.
IPO Debut Raises Expectations for Jio
Jio Platforms' market debut added a financial milestone to the company's technology ambitions. According to the supplied report, its shares listed on the National Stock Exchange at ₹1,358 each, representing a 21.4% premium over the IPO issue price of ₹1,119.
Ambani said the public offering received demand worth more than ₹7.5 lakh crore and attracted over 1.3 crore Indian investors. He also said the IPO was fully subscribed within 95 minutes.
He acknowledged the responsibility that comes with the investment, telling shareholders that the company must protect and grow their wealth through sustained value creation.
His message linked customer experience directly to shareholder returns. Jio, he said, would continue to build trust, improve services and create value for both groups.
The public listing also gives investors a more direct stake in the company's future performance. Jio will need to show that its planned expansion into advanced technologies can support sustainable growth, while maintaining the customer base and services that underpin its existing business.
Jio Wants to Become a Global Technology Company
Ambani presented Jio's ambitions as part of a broader change in India's role in the global technology industry. He argued that India is increasingly becoming a creator of technology rather than simply a market for products developed elsewhere.
He described Jio's platforms as products built in India for Indian needs and said the company aims to expand its reach internationally. His stated ambition is for Jio Platforms to become one of the world's recognised technology companies.
That goal will depend on execution. Expanding AI, cloud infrastructure and space connectivity requires technical capabilities, investment and services that can compete across different markets. The speech outlined the direction but did not disclose detailed financial commitments or measurable targets for the next decade.
Ambani also pledged open communication with investors and said the company would seek to earn their trust through action rather than promises alone.
The Next Decade Will Test Jio's Ambitions
Jio's stock market debut marks the beginning of a new chapter, but the company's longer-term plans will be judged by what it delivers. Affordable connectivity helped it build a massive customer base. Its next challenge is to make advanced digital services equally accessible while creating lasting value for shareholders.
Ambani's message was clear: Jio intends to expand beyond data and telecommunications into AI, cloud computing, connected devices and space-based connectivity. Whether that ambition translates into a global technology business will depend on the company's ability to turn its plans into practical services over the coming years.
