Elon Musk is facing a new political and regulatory challenge after Democrats secured control of both chambers of the US Congress and defeated Republican candidates he had financially supported with hundreds of millions of dollars. The election results have raised questions about the future of his business empire, particularly Tesla and SpaceX, as Democratic lawmakers prepare to intensify congressional scrutiny of his companies, government contracts and business activities.
The billionaire entrepreneur reportedly spent nearly $500 million supporting Republican candidates during the 2026 midterm election cycle, making him one of the largest political donors in the country. A significant portion of his political spending was directed towards protecting Republican influence in Texas, where several of his major business operations and personal interests are based. The state is home to Tesla and SpaceX, alongside other major projects linked to Musk's expanding technology and artificial intelligence ambitions.
According to Reuters, Musk had already spent approximately $366 million on the 2026 midterm elections by October 12, including $276 million since July. His political contributions were intended to help Republicans maintain control of Congress at a time when Democrats were gaining momentum in several competitive races.
The election results, however, delivered a different outcome. Democrats captured both the House of Representatives and the Senate, significantly changing the political balance in Washington. In Texas, Democratic candidate Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican incumbent Greg Abbott in the gubernatorial election, ending more than three decades of Republican control of the state's governor's office.
The defeat represents a significant setback for Musk, who had publicly encouraged his followers on X to support Republican candidates shortly before voting concluded. His political involvement had become increasingly visible following his earlier support for Donald Trump during the 2024 presidential election, when he contributed more than $250 million towards efforts supporting Trump's victory.
Musk's relationship with the Trump administration also brought him closer to federal policymaking. His involvement in the Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE, placed him at the centre of efforts to reduce federal spending and restructure government operations. However, the programme's extensive workforce reductions and questions surrounding the administration's relationship with Musk's companies attracted criticism from Democratic lawmakers.
The billionaire's reaction to reports of potential congressional investigations has also attracted attention. Before the election results became clear, reports suggested that a Democratic-controlled Congress could investigate several aspects of his business operations if Republicans lost their majorities.
Musk responded on X to a report titled "Capitol Agenda: Dem Gavels Are Coming for Elon Musk" with a warning directed at those he believed were organising political opposition against him.
"Live by the sword, die by the sword. Those who pick fights with me should understand that I will find out who is really pulling the strings and come for them, not just their puppets..."

Financial markets have also reacted to the changing political environment. Shares of SpaceX fell approximately 3.8 per cent in premarket trading, while Tesla shares declined around 3.6 per cent as investors assessed the potential consequences of Democratic control of Congress. Subsequent trading reports indicated further declines in both companies' share prices.
One area attracting particular attention is the development of large artificial intelligence data centres. SpaceX has presented investors with an addressable market estimated at $28.5 trillion ahead of its planned initial public offering. However, the expansion of data centre infrastructure requires regulatory approvals, significant electricity supplies, land availability and cooperation from state and local authorities.
A Democratic-controlled Congress could increase scrutiny of projects connected to Musk's companies. Lawmakers may also examine the environmental impact of large data centres, their electricity requirements and the potential consequences for local communities. Any delays in approvals could affect the expansion plans of businesses relying on large-scale computing infrastructure.
Musk's companies have also faced questions over their relationship with the US government. SpaceX receives substantial government contracts and plays an important role in American space operations. Its satellite communications network, Starlink, has also attracted international attention following controversies surrounding restrictions on Ukrainian military access to satellite communications.
Democratic lawmakers have previously questioned Musk's influence over federal operations, the scale of government contracts awarded to his companies and the consequences of his decisions for national security and public services.
The change in congressional leadership could give those concerns a formal political platform. The House Oversight Committee, which investigates government activities and potential misconduct, has extensive authority to request documents, summon witnesses and issue subpoenas. Its investigations could place senior officials and executives connected to the Trump administration under increased scrutiny.
Following the Democratic victory, incoming House Oversight Committee Chair Robert Garcia, a Democratic representative from California, issued a warning directed at Trump, his family and members of his administration.
The statement signalled that the incoming committee leadership intends to pursue investigations into the administration's activities. Although any investigation involving Musk would require specific legal and congressional grounds, his government connections and extensive federal business interests could attract renewed attention.
Democrats now have the opportunity to use congressional oversight powers to examine federal contracts, government spending decisions and the operations of agencies that interacted with Musk during his involvement in DOGE.
For Musk, the consequences could extend beyond political disagreements. Tesla and SpaceX operate in industries where government policy, regulatory approvals, public funding and national security considerations can directly influence business decisions. Increased congressional scrutiny could create uncertainty for major projects, particularly those involving artificial intelligence, defence, satellite infrastructure and energy consumption.
The election has therefore created a new political environment for one of America's most influential business figures. Whether congressional investigations lead to substantial changes in his companies' operations remains uncertain. However, with Democrats controlling both chambers, Musk's political influence and government relationships are likely to face closer examination during the next congressional session.
